Xuan Huong Lake

In 1922, according to the plan of restoring the city by the Minister P. Doumer, the civil engineer Lable had an artificial pool made, a dam build on the old valley and made a new lake with a French name “grand Lac”. A year later, another dam was built down-side but in 1932, a violent storm blew p the two dams, later a bigger dam was built and it is still there today (it was named after the first Vietnamese Manager, Mr. Pham Khac Hoe).

In 1953, according to Ngo Dinh Diem regime, some names in the South were Vietnamesalized and this lake had a new name: Xuan Huong lake (it means: send out scent in the spring). The lake has an area of 5,5km and its average depth is 1.5m. Around the lake there are two kinds of trees which are considered to be the specialties of Dalat: the cherry trees and the willow trees. From about chrismas time cherry flowers blossom up round the lake which remind visitors of the spring in the North. In the late afternoon, having a walk from Hoa Binh square to the lake and going round Thuy Ta restaurant the Thanh Thuy restaurant, visitors will feel the coolness of a temperate climate, and will relax. According to history, Xuan Huong lake is the source of then name Dalat. This is the first sight 8in Lam Dong which was confirmed as a National Sight in 1988.

For many year, the race around Xuan Huong lake has become an official race of the National bicycle race performed by HCM city T.V station every year and which has been always broadcast live. At Xuan Huong lake, some services such as water bicycle 30,000dongs/person/hour, going on cano, 60,000dongs to 80,000/a cano/an hour, can take visitors on a trip on the lake; there is also rubber dinghys (40,000dongs/hour which can hold 4 people at a time in an hour).

Welcome to Dalat, Vietnam

Vietnam’s Dalat—nicknamed “The City of Love,” “Le Petit Paris,” and “City of Eternal Spring”—has long been popular with Vietnamese and expatriate artists and writers who have taken up residence in villas around town. The area, originally inhabited by the Lat and Ma hill tribes which now live in nearby Chicken Village and Lat Village, increased in popularity during the French colonial era. More than 2,000 beautiful French villas dot the area.

Dalat is known all over Vietnam for its flowers. Set next to Xuan Huong Lake, the Dalat Flower Gardens were established in 1966 by the Vietnamese government, and are refined continually. Among the tastefully arranged flora are orchids, hydrangeas, fuchsias, and ferns. Plants and flowers are also for sale, including special fern fibers used to stop bleeding in traditional oriental medicine. Across the road from the Flower Gardens are nurseries with various types of bonsai trees, artfully laid out around the lake.
